Spurs Transfers: 5 Quick Defensive Fixes Tim Sherwood Should Consider In January

5. Benoit Assou-Ekotto

If all else fails, Tim Sherwood should consider recalling Benoit Assou-Ekotto from his loan spell at Harry Redknapp's Championship club Queens Park Rangers. The decision to let him go was questionable at best and was said to be due to Andre Villas-Boas' personal problems with the player both as a professional and as a man. Regardless, with only Danny Rose as a genuinely seasoned and senior left back in the squad, Assou-Ekotto should have at least remained at White Hart Lane as his backup (as proven when Jan Vertonghen was forced to cover for Rose when he was injured earlier in the season). Zeke Fryers has done a decent job when he has come in at left back, but he isn't yet experienced or good enough to cope against the bigger clubs in the Premier League. More to the point, Assou-Ekotto is arguably a better player than Danny Rose and some competition for the young Englishman could only be good for him. If nothing else materialises on the transfer front, bringing Assou-Ekotto back - as cover, at the very least - should definitely be under consideration, as Jan Vertonghen is wasted at left back and Spurs don't want to have to play him there again should Rose find himself on the sidelines again. However, it has been said that Tom Carroll, and not Assou-Ekotto, will be the man returning to Spurs from Loftus Road this winter €“ let's hope the Lilywhites don't live to regret that, if it is indeed the case.
