Sunderland Linked With Man United Winger
The Belgian international could be a shrewd acquisition.
Despite signing exciting Dutch forward Jeremain Lens earlier this week, Sunderland seem keen to further bolster their attacking options, having been linked with young Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj. Rumours of the 20 year old's departure have emerged as a result of his slide down the United pecking order, with Sunderland the bookies' favourite among a gaggle of suitors including Everton and Real Sociedad. The young Belgian shone during David Moyes' brief reign at Old Trafford, but seems to have fallen out of favour under Louis van Gaal. Despite being given the number 11 shirt last worn by Ryan Giggs, he was forced to oversee much of the 2014/15 season from the bench, rarely making an impression in the starting line-up. Sunderland fans will be more familiar with Januzaj than most. The winger scored two goals at the Stadium of Light in 2013, turning Craig Gardner's opener into nothing more than a footnote. He was also responsible for setting up Javier Hernandez's heart-stopping equaliser in the League Cup semi final, easily beating his man down the left hand side and placing a tantalising low ball across the box. He then went on to miss his spot kick in the ensuing shootout, firing straight into the arms of Vito Mannone. There's little doubt that Januzaj would be an exciting and welcome arrival at the Stadium of Light. He didn't seem to suffer a dip in form at United, and appears to merely have been the victim of a managerial shake-up. Sunderland fans will be hoping for a few more signings before the end of the transfer window, and the team could certainly use extra wide options, given the current legal troubles of Adam Johnson and the uninspiring performances of Will Buckley and Ricardo Alvarez.
