have confirmed that they have completed the blockbuster signing of Manchester City and England winger Adam Johnson for an undisclosed fee. 25-year-old Johnson, a native from the North East who started his career at Newcastle United as a youngster before moving to Middlesbrough's Academy where he eventually flourished in the first team and made his name, joins the Black Cats on a four-year deal. Sunderland's official website confirmed the deal late on Friday night and manager Martin O'Neill spoke of his delight at capturing Johnson, on the same day former Wolves striker Steven Fletcher completed his big money move to the Stadium of Light;

"Adding quality players to the squad has been our main aim this summer and Adam certainly fits that bill. "He has terrific ability, great delivery and I'm sure he is a player who will excite our fans. I couldn't be more delighted to have him at the football club.''
Johnson returns to the North East after struggling to cement a regular place at Manchester City once Spanish winger David Silva arrived in 2010. The left-footed winger who often operates on the right, made 26 appearances last season and the lack of a full campaign may have hurt his England chances as he missed out on Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad this past summer. Playing regularly for Sunderland could revive his international career which currently stands at 11 senior caps and two goals. In total, Johnson played 97 times for Manchester City and produced 15 goals, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield. He joined the club on February 1st, 2010 from Middlesbrough in an undisclosed move (Sunderland's website claim it was a reported £7 million), where he played 120 times and scored 13 goals.
