Sunderland Transfers: 5 Reasons Poyet MUST Sign Michael Dawson

5. The Current Lack Of Quality

Sunderland€™s problems last season stemmed from two major issues; the first was not scoring enough goals, but the return to fitness of Steven Fletcher and the attempts to resign Fabio Borini should help address that, but the second was an inability to stop opponents scoring. There was a good reason Vito Mannone looked so good at times last year - ranking third overall in Squawka€™s rundown of the best €˜keepers in the league for the season - and it wasn€™t merely a matter of his ability. He was ultimately called into action way too much, and Sunderland€™s conceded figure of 60 was the second worse outside of the bottom three - just 2 goals behind relegated Norwich City. Something has to change in the Sunderland backline, and though Billy Jones and Patrick Van Aanholt will reinvent the full-back positions, the centre of defence still needs considerable attention, and Michael Dawson would be a significant improvement on the currently available options.
