Sunderland vs Stoke: Team News, Match Preview & Likely Line-Ups

Match Preview

paolo di canio Ever since Paolo di Canio assumed control of Sunderland back in April, the Black Cats have enjoyed a terrific renaissance that saw them apparently abate their relegation fears. However, recent results, including that potentially damaging 6-1 drubbing by Aston Villa last Monday, have seen them dragged right back into the battle at the bottom. With Wigan dramatically winning at the weekend, only two points separate the two, while the Latics will have a game in hand afterwards. While today's clash with Stoke comes exactly a week after their hammering by Villa, it also comes a day after the 40th anniversary of Sunderland's famous FA Cup final win over Leeds United, and a win here would go a long way to reliving happier times, particularly if di Canio's team can retain their top flight status. As for Stoke, it's been another one of those "fair to middling" campaigns. Apparently safe all season, the Potters are hovering mid-table after a really poor run of form, but two successive wins have helped them drag themselves out of danger. A win here would definitely guarantee survival, and heap further misery on the Black Cats.
