Sunderland’s 10 Best Premier League Games Since They Won Promotion
2. Chelsea 0-3 Sunderland - 2010/11
This was possibly Sunderland’s greatest ever Premier League result. Few sides leave Stamford Bridge with all three points, let alone a three goal victory.
Few gave Sunderland a chance considering that their top goalscorer Darren Bent was out with injury, but this was a side featuring classier players than the Black Cats have had more recently.
The likes of Bolo Zenden and Jordan Henderson ran the midfield, whilst the energy of Danny Welbeck complimented the skill of Asamoah Gyan.
The scoring was opened shortly before half time after an incredible run from on-loan defender Nedum Onuoha was matched by a delicious finish into the bottom corner.
The second half saw Sunderland turn up the quality. A flowing passing move, yes a Sunderland flowing move, put Asamoah Gyan one on one with Petr Cech. The Ghanaian slotted the ball perfectly into the corner, prompting Bolo Zenden to hilariously attempt to join in Gyan’s dancing celebration.
Somewhat surprisingly, Zenden hasn’t been called to appear on Strictly Come Dancing since that moment.
The result was capped with Danny Welbeck’s first goal for the club as he capitalised on a disastrous Ashley Cole back pass to make it 0-3.
Stamford Bridge was stunned.
