Sunderland's Worst XI Of The 21st Century

8. James McClean

Perhaps the player on this list who made the most promising start, McClean looked at one stage the solution to Sunderland's characteristic lack of pace in the post-Steve Bruce years. Instead he suffered an almighty slump, and must go down as one of the most frustrating players in recent memory. Like a Connor Wickham of the wing, McClean had all the physical tools needed to succeed in his position - but none of the decision-making. Countless attacks were spurned by the Irishman's tendency to put his head down and charge in a straight line, an offensive liability easily contained by pretty much every other team in the league towards the end of his spell. He was eventually lost his place to Jack Colback - not a wing player by any stretch of the imagination. Where Is He Now: McClean spent the next two seasons in the Championship with Wigan, and evidently impressed enough to secure a return to the Premier League. He's in the West Brom squad for next season.
