Although Mick McCarthy was responsible for the more disastrous of the Black Cats' two 21st century relegations, he at least had an earlier promotion from the second tier to show for his efforts. He cleaned up the mess of a man with no redeeming qualities in the eyes of Sunderland fans - Howard Wilkinson. Wilkinson arrived in the wake of Peter Reid's October 2002 sacking. He proceeded to utterly ruin the club's chances of staving off relegation, winning only two of 20 league games in charge. He oversaw the infamous home defeat to Charlton Athletic, in which the team embarrassingly conceded three own goals. Where Is He Now: Wilkinson had one further job in management, briefly taking charge of Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua for just two months. He his most recent role was as director of former club Sheffield Wednesday.
