10. Steve Marlet - Fulham (£11.5m)

Jean Tigana brought in Steve Marlet for Fulham back in 2001, making the French striker the club's £11.5 million record signing. It's not too big a fee nowadays but considering Fulham were newly promoted and this was well over a decade ago, the transfer was quite the big deal. Marlet signed from Lyon but had a horrible spell in the Premier League, scoring on average once every five games - a shocking return for a player who was supposed to lead Fulham's strike force. But it got worse. Club owner Mohammed Al Fayed ended up taking Tigana to court over the transfer of Marlet, claiming that the French coach had intentionally overpaid for the striker - who Al Fayed didn't think was worth a penny over £7 million. Al Fayed declared that he 'wouldn't let any any crook destroy Fulham,' though he eventually lost the case. That didn't stop the now former owner of the Championship club launching a scathing attack on Marlet, being highly critical of his performances at Craven Cottage. Al Fayed was not happy with Marlet's contribution, given he was paying the Frenchman £30,000-a-week in wages.
