The Most Expensive England XI Of All Time
3. CM: Danny Drinkwater - £34.1 Million
Up to now this team has been pretty solid. But that has all changed, because for reasons that defy all sense and logic, Chelsea broke the bank to sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester in 2017.
It should be said that prior to his move, Drinkwater was an OK defensive midfielder, who played his part in the miracle that was the Foxes' Premier League triumph in 2016, before being cruelly left out of England's Euros squad for that summer.
But after his midfield partner, N'Golo Kante, departed for Chelsea, it became clear which one of the two was the real star, with the Frenchman going on to lift another Premier League trophy and being named PFA Player of the Year.
Regardless, Drinkwater joined the Blues but has made just 23 appearances for them in three years. And things haven't gone much better off the pitch. In early 2019 he pleaded guilty to drink-driving and just a few months later, while on loan at Burnley, he injured his ankle ligaments during a fight outside a nightclub.
He's now on loan at relegation threatened Aston Villa, no doubt still getting paid a hefty sum by his parent club to warm the bench.
