After the ridiclous, vulgar spectacle of last year's January transfer window, which almost saw Jim White of Sky Sports News blow a gasket live on air, this year's event was a far more understated affair, with far less money spent and fewer knee-jerk decisions into the final hours of January. It seems everyone has learned something from the Andy Carroll/Fernando Torres saga, with the austere measures required by the upcoming Financial Fairplay rules casting an ominous shadow over proceedings.
Total Money Spent: £58,300,000 Newcastle United fans may well count themselves the luckiest fans in the league, having seen none of their star players sold, despite constant fear in the wake of past deals taking talents like Andy Carroll, Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton away from the club. Adding to that the high-profile capture of Papiss Demba Cisse from Freiburg to join hotshot Demba Ba up-front and Newcastle fans can certainly count themselves lucky: it seems Mike Ashley's Grand Plan isn't all bad, even if Steven Taylor's season ending injury wasn't covered by an incoming centre-half. Cisse to Newcastle if he enjoys anything like the scoring form of his Senegalese team-mate Demba Ba, or perhaps Marvin Sordell at Bolton, whose £3m move from Watford could well change the season for Owen Coyle's men.
