At the 2005 Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Federer arranged an exhibition involving several top players from the ATP tour and WTA tour called "Rally for Relief". The proceeds from the event went to the victims of the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Since then, he has visited South Africa and Tamil Nadu, one of the areas in India most affected by the tsunami. More than 18,000 people in India, a third of them children, were killed or reported missing by the tsunami on December 26, 2004.
In 2005, Federer auctioned his racquet from his US Open championship to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The racquet fetched $25,665 in an online auction promoted by TennisKatrina.com. The proceeds of which went toward hurricane relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
