World Cup 2014: 5 Southampton Players Who Could Represent England

3. Luke Shaw

Those of us that know about football will have had Luke Shaw on our radar for some time, despite the fact that the defender is still only 18. He has though played a regular part in Southampton€™s league games so far this season with 14 appearances. Shaw has certainly performed well with an average rating of 6.9, which ranks him as the club€™s third best performing English player this season. It seems that the next logical step for the player is to make his England debut after playing for his national side at youth levels including U16, U17 and his current involvement at U21 level. Shaw has also now made over 40 appearances for his club side despite his young age. I would personally love to see Shaw gain the experience of going to the World Cup in Brazil, and with Ashley Cole not getting much playing time at Chelsea it would seem a sensible move. The time has come for Leighton Baines to become England€™s first choice option in that position. It will be interesting to see if of Hodgson is brave enough to take Shaw as the backup choice. Of course, it€™s worth remembering that Shaw is another graduate from the Southampton academy.
