World Matchplay Of Darts 2014: 10 Most Likely Potential Winners

6. Raymond Van Barneveld

Raymond van Barneveld enters the World Matchplay as the 2014 Premier League champion. This is an outstanding achievement for any top darts player, not only due to the stiff competition, but also the endurance that is required to pull off such a feat. The league was played over 16 weeks and to come out on top, Raymond had to be consistent each week. He looked solid throughout the group matches, then really turned it on during the semi-final and final, in which he defeated Michael van Gerwen 10-6. This means he is one of the favourites to lift the Matchplay trophy as the legs rather than sets format is something he clearly enjoys. He came close to a Matchplay title in 2010, when he lost to Phil Taylor in the final. This year he faces fellow Dutchman Vincent van der Voort in the first round. This looks to be an exciting opening encounter as two opposing styles are put against each other. Barney is a measured and steady thrower, whilst van der Voort plays 'blink and you miss it' darts. Barney's experience and measured approach should see him through this first round tie, however if he gets off to a bad start, van der Voort can reel off legs very quickly. If Barney does progress he will instantly become a contender and one to watch out for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU0vJKyZPz0
