5. Shane Ferguson - 6.5
Ferguson has been one of the success stories from pre-season, and he was once again quietly impressive - if hardly outstanding - during the 2-1 loss to York. Playing left-back, Ferguson benefitted from the licence McClaren gives to his full-backs to get forward at every opportunity, and he provided some decent crosses both from open play and set-pieces. Unlikely to be a first-team regular this season, Ferguson showed a few of the touches that first gained him recognition at the Magpies a few years ago.
