Star Wars Clone Wars

What else right? If someone would go to a drawing board and start chalking up the ideal features that make up a good fantasy show, chances are the final list will end up describing the Last Airbender.

A plot that was ahead of its time, characters that become some of the biggest icons in entertainment history and one of the best final payoffs ever seen, this was fantasy entertainment at its quintessential best.

When the show kicks off with The Boy in the Iceberg, we find a world ravaged by war and dominated by a tyrannical empire. Aang’s first appearance was a young boy who could only have thoughts for playtime and jokes. Beside him, Sokka was a thick headed wannabe soldier, weighed down by responsibilities and stereotypes. And lastly Katara was an overly idealistic young girl who could not even get others to properly appreciate and help develop her powers.

From there, we see the trio grow into battle-hardened heroes who go toe to toe with the Fire Nation and stand tall. At the same time we also see Zuko battle his own past, aided of course by the greatest wise-man in TV history, Uncle Iroh. Then in Book 2 Toph enters the fray and instantly becomes one of the baddest women to ever grace a screen.

It wasn't just the main characters who made the show a success. Avatar became renowned for its plethora of interesting personalities from all corners of the sociocultural spectrum. And when it was time for the grand finale, we could visually see how far these characters had come.

The final battle also lived up to the hype, even offering one last twist before we could all choke up and cry as Aang and Katara seal the show with a kiss.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
