6. The Witchfinders [Season 11, Episode 8]
The TARDIS crew turn up in Lancashire in the 17th century, only to discover the local lady of the manor has been holding witch trials. Unable to save one woman that is dunked, the Doctor and her companions pretend to be witchfinders and try to stop the madness. This turns out to be a challenge though when King James I himself turns up intent on hunting witches; and mud begins to possess the dead.
This episode is wonderfully shot, with scenes of gloomy fields and stark bare branches against the sky, that make it feel isolated and autumnal. The story is full of historical interest, as the action takes place near Pendle Hill, where real witches were tried. Whilst the Doctor being accused of being a witch is a interesting plot point, that has echoes of Midnight, as the Doctor is perceived as a threat rather than someone intent on helping.
