10 Biggest Doctor Who Missed Opportunities

1. Lack Of Companion Variety

This is, in our humble opinion, the most egregious sin of the modern era.

Even though the majority were still humanoids, the classic years found a way to implement plenty of different companions, and that’s something that NuWho has been sorely lacking.

We’re not asking for full-on prosthetic-clad aliens or prop robots here. As Kamelion and K9 have taught us, they have a tendency to be a production nightmare. But would it be such a terrible thing to give us someone from a different planet, or dare we say a different time period, slightly more often?

Aside from the likes of Jack and Nardole, we’ve not had a single companion that isn’t from present-day earth, and over half of them have been women in their twenties. We understand the need for an audience surrogate in a show like this, but there’s no reason why that role can’t be filled by just about anybody.

We got so close to more companion variety with Victorian Clara, only for her to fall to her death not 30 seconds after officially accepting the companion job. And unfortunately, with present-day teen Ruby Sunday due to join the TARDIS alongside the Fifteenth Doctor, it looks like we’ll have to wait even longer still.
