10 Doctor Who Characters Who Would Make A Great Prime Minister
3. Mike Yates
The Brigadier is an easy pick for the job of Downing Street custodian, having formed the core of the UNIT family who played such an important role in Doctor Who during the early 70s. But it could be argued that the beloved commander is ultimately a "yes" man, much happier to occupy a rung on the ladder rather than dictate from the top. Not many others fulfill the right criteria either. Liz Shaw? Too superior. Jo Grant? Scatty. Sergeant Benton? Please! A true candidate for Prime Minister is surely Mike Yates. Debonair, dashing and with a delivery clearer than Morbius's brain casing, he is a Tory PR person's dream and, in today's image-conscious society, that gives him an edge over his natural rival in this hypothetical election, Ian Chesteron. Voters would take Captain Yates seriously. Not only is he compassionate, he's resolute in the face of danger and his glowing service record in defence of the country speaks for itself. Part of the establishment, yet friendly and approachable enough to win the hearts and minds of those who haven't been to Eton. In short, he exudes genuine class. A chink in his armour may present itself in the form of an outdated sexist attitude. Imagine Mike wandering into the UN, seeing Angela Merkel and asking her when the tea trolley's coming round? Just one of the possible hazards for Lethbridge-Stewart's golden boy.
