10 Doctor Who Storylines That Were Suddenly Abandoned
8. The Cartmel MasterPlan
Given the show's untimely cancellation in 1989, there were always going to be a couple of unanswered questions. Bigger still were some of the unfinished plans Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel developed with fellow writers Ben Aaronovitch, and Marc Platt in what became known as the Cartmel Masterplan. This idea was designed to add some mystery back into the Doctor's life, revealing that he was far more than an average Timelord. Seeds were sown in McCoy's second two seasons, most notably his secrets in SIlver Nemesis and the battle with Fenric in The Curse Of Fenric. Had the show continued, it would have been revealed that alongside Omega and Rassilon, the Doctor was actually one of the founding fathers of Gallifrey, towering above the Timelords who followed and treated as a demigod. In fact he may have gone by another name; The Other, a mysterious figure mentioned in Remembrance Of The Daleks. There was certainly a lot of interesting ideas in the Cartmel Masterplan; while the show ultimately went down a different route in its revival, there is an element of the Doctor being all powerful following the death of his race, suggesting that maybe he is a bit of a god after all...
