10 Forgotten Horror TV Shows You MUST Watch

8. The Enfield Haunting

American Gothic
Sky Living

Based on Guy Lyon Playfair's book, which was in turn inspired by the real-life Enfield Poltergeist mystery, The Enfield Haunting was a British miniseries that aired in May 2015 (beating The Conjuring 2 to the punch by over a year) on Sky Living, The show's narrative was largely shaped by recordings and witness statements from the 1977 to 1979 phenomenon. It featured actors such as Matthew MacFayden, Timothy Spall and Juliet Stevenson.

Unlike its big-budget counterpart across the pond, The Enfield Haunting is a more toned down affair, eschewing jump-scares and overwhelming musical beats in favour of a more voyeuristic approach to the inner workings of a haunting and its impact on its victims.

Though the veracity of the mystery has been questioned in the decades since its initial reporting, there is no denying that the Sky drama's straightforward approach makes for more compelling viewing (for starters, Spall's Maurice Grosse is quietly more interesting than The Conjuring's more theatrical Warrens) and feels like a product from an earlier time.

This quality is undoubtedly part of its appeal but may have contributed to its reduced presence in conversations surrounding the haunting sub-genre.
