5. David Hale - Sons Of Anarchy

If anyone on this list deserved an inglorious death, it was Hale. As far as I'm concerned the guy quickly became one of the most pointless characters in Sons. The original concept made sense while Wayne Unser was under the thumb of SamCro, Hale was the straight cop determined to bring down the gang that dirtied the streets of Charming. Though Unser and some of his fellow officers at the Charming PD considered SamCro an unfortunate necessity, Hale thought of them as nothing more than a criminal nuisance and a stepping stone for his own career, a step which would see him take the job of the corrupt chief. Slowly however this integrity began to slip away, and we saw Hale begin to cut Jax and the rest of the sons more and more slack. This left me wondering something if he gave up on his most fundamental driving character point, just what in the hell he was in the show for anyway? I get the whole shades of grey characterisation and all that, but if we already have Unser in the Sons' pocket, it seemed utterly pointless that we have the second highest ranking member of the local police force in bed with them as well, especially as he was the only law-abiding member of the cast. This is why I wasn't particularly sad to see him go, but still I didnt see it coming when it actually did. The characters portrayer had decided that he wanted to move on to another project, so it was decided to kill him off. Despite the fact that David was the Deputy Chief of the Charming PD, when it came time for him to spring into action in the opening episode of season three, he seemed to forget the most basic of training. Whilst he and several cops are providing security at Half-Sack's funeral, it comes under attack from a group in a van. Rather than taking cover and directing his officers, Hale decided to stand right in the path of the oncoming vehicle and is mowed down. So I guess if you decide to leave Sons of Anarchy of you own volition, you certainly aren't going to be doing it in style.
