Tonally the 1996 TV Movie featuring the Eighth Doctor was a wild departure from the Classic series and was a tough pill for many fans to swallow.

While today the episode could barely be seen as controversial at the time its more modern storytelling and the Americanisation of a quintessentially English show resulted in a backlash from Whovians. Perhaps this may sounds like an extreme reaction but it does feel like the people behind this failed American pilot had never watched an episode of Doctor Who at times.

One of the most unforgivable moments was a throw away line that Paul McGann's Doctor utters about being "half-human, on [his] mother's side". This opened the floodgates to questions about why the episode was seemingly rewriting the character's history (even it was probably just meant as a joke).

And of course there is the infamous kiss between the Doctor and Grace, a first in Doctor Who's history after his previous indifference to these urges. While this upset many at the time it has since paved the way for Nu-Who's more romantic Doctor as seen most noticably in David Tennant and Matt Smith's incarnations.
