1. St. Elsewhere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fce6tlwwjQo And yet no show in the history of television has shown such open contempt for its audience as St. Elsewhere, a programme so eager to upset its viewers at the final hurdle that it's clear that the writers had some fun doing so, probably cackling to themselves as the last episode aired. Set in a hospital, the show was for most of its run an intriguing, frequently heartfelt drama about the relationships between the doctors and their patients, and the show also helped kick-start the careers of the likes of Helen Hunt and Denzel Washington. How it all ends, then, is just a massive kick in the nads. The final scene of the show pans out from a hospital window to reveal that the entire hospital is actually inside a snow globe, and what's more, this snow globe is being held by an autistic child, who happens to be the son of the hospital's Director of Medicine. Some expository dialogue hammers the point home that the show's entirety has been a fabrication, and as if that wasn't bad enough, MTM's cute cat mascot Mimsie, who had appeared at the end of every episode's credits, flat-lines at the end (as you can see in the above video). Talk about a show that absolutely loathes it's audience; there is no better example. Which TV series finales riled you up the most? Let us know in the comments below.
