2. The Extra Seat At The Table Represents The Fans
This one could be seen as perhaps less of a theory and more a scrutinising of the layout of the show. Though, if it does actually carry weight to it, it could be one of the best-hidden gems of the whole series.
The theory that some have loved, originally by /brigodon/, is that the extra seat next to Jeff when the study group take their seats is actually meant to represent the fans. It is meant to show that the eighth member of the group are the very people that watch the series.
When the show started it was always interesting that Jeff and Britta, who seemed to be the parents of the group, sat next to one another and Jeff had nobody directly next to him. This kind of indicated that the circle that they all formed had a beginning and an end.
Even on other tables they sometimes sit in these positions, notably in 'Remedial Chaos Theory' where the other timelines are introduced, but it could just be overanalysing.
However, the fans being left a seat at the table has always been an interesting prospect, since other fans have commented that this is an old marketing trick to make people feel more comfortable when watching ads.
So, it just as likely represents nothing as it does something. Though, if that is true, why would their seating positions on other tables remain the same?
