9. Shireen's Sacrifice
Season five certainly put viewers through the wringer, with a number of important characters meeting the literal axe; even if one of them didn’t stay dead for long.
One of them was Stannis Baratheon and while he was never the cuddliest of characters, his love for his daughter Shireen showed there was a good man buried under all the glowering. Even that couldn’t stop his quest to become King, so when the Red Lady suggested burning Shireen to show him the way to victory he didn't hesitate for long.
Watching Shireen get burned at the stake at her father’s order is the definition of misery, especially when she cries to her parents. Even the innocent have to suffer on this show, and only the stoniest of hearts could watch this scene and feel nothing. The act only led Stannis to his own demise, and there was nobody left to mourn him afterwards.
