10 Things That Every Doctor Who Fan Is Waiting For
7. Blast From The Past
Unless you've been living in the Medusa Cascade, you'll know that Doctor Who commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013 but, as momentous as the landmark celebrations were, there were two familiar faces (along with all of the rest) missing from the otherwise far reaching festivities. Many fans, especially those who have been watching since the show's inception, had hoped that its momentous milestone would pave the way for the return - in some shape or form, at least - of Carole Ann Ford and William Russell as Susan Foreman and Ian Chesterton. As the Doctor's original on screen companions ("the ones who started it all", if you will), their characters were more than deserving to be included in the episode which claimed to mark half a century since their first on screen outing in An Unearthly Child. As the Doctor's granddaughter, Susan would've also made the events of The Day of the Doctor even more personal for the titular Time Lord. Suffice to say, it didn't happen. To claim that they weren't invited to the the party at all, though, wouldn't be entirely true. Clara Oswald now works at Coal Hill School which - back in the very first episode - is where Susan was studying and Ian was working as a science teacher. The opening shot of The Day of the Doctor revealed that Ian is now the school's Chairman of the Governors so it's nice that his name made it to the screen in that regard. Carole Ann Ford, meanwhile, was a guest presenter at the 2013 Doctor Who Proms so she got to leave some sort of mark on the festivities. Jacqueline Hill also deserved some recognition, too. Although she couldn't have psychically appeared in the episode (owing to the fact that she sadly passed away in 1993), she also played a fundamental part in the show's inception with her role as Barbara Wright, Ian's colleague, credited for speaking the first on screen words heard in the series (the somewhat forgettable "Wait in here please, Susan. I won't be long", but the point still stands!) and she was also the first character to encounter a Dalek on screen which isn't too shabby. More on screen action from Susan and Ian are surely two returns that every fan is waiting for but the nation is also holding its breath for the return of another relation to the Doctor...
