10 Times Star Trek Refused To Give Fans What They Wanted

4. Cancelling The Original Series

It's common knowledge that The Original Series nearly ended after it's second season. The main reason it returned for a third season is because of a massive letter-writing campaign by fans of the show (that were actually orchestrated in part by Gene Roddenberry and other creative leads behind the show).

However, less people are aware that there was actually another letter-writing campaign started in the winter of 1968, with the goal of renewing the show for a fourth season (just as word spread that the show would not be on the network's fall 1969 schedule).

Unfortunately, this attempt was unsuccessful and, by the time the decision was made to revive the cancelled show, most of the show's production assets (such as props and sets) had already been dismantled, given away, or simply stolen, which was a major factor that led to the creation of Star Trek: The Animated Series.

The Original Series is still viewed today as the pinnacle of Trek by some fans, and it's truly a shame that it ended so early.
