13 Doctor Who Guest Stars Who Were Tragically Underused
9. Jessica Hynes
Jessica Hynes made quite an impact in the Doctor Who mythology when she guest starred as Matron Joan Redfern in 2007's critically acclaimed Human Nature/The Family of Blood two-parter. As the love interest of the Doctor's human disguise, John Smith, she was exactly the sort of person you'd want the Time Lord to settle down with if he ever decided to permanently give up the reigns as the Universe's chief defender. Alas, it just wasn't to be. John Smith was ultimately forced to choose between 'his' world and the actual one which meant that their time together was unfortunately over before it had truly began. Viewers were shown snippets of what could've been, though, which made the whole thing even more soul crushing. Fans of Jessica and David Tennant's faultless on screen chemistry did get more from then later that same year in the BBC one off drama Learners and she also made a short but sweet appearance - as author Verity Newman, otherwise known as Joan's great granddaughter - in the Tenth Doctor's final episode, The End of Time, Part Two. Fans still want more, more, more though and you should definitely check her out as Daisy Steiner in Spaced (which she co-wrote and starred in alongside the previously mentioned Simon Pegg) and as Cheryl Carroll in The Royle Family in the meantime.
