8 Doctor Who Stars With Oscar Gold
1. Peter Capaldi
Despite being one of the best actors to ever play the Doctor, Peter Capaldi hasn't won an Oscar for his acting, yet. The man is something of a polymath however, writing and recording music, writing screenplays and directing movies. It was through writing and directing that Capaldi won his first, and to date, only Oscar in 1995.
Starring future Great Intelligence Richard E Grant, Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life is a mash-up of the work of Kafka with Frank Capra's Christmas classic. Capaldi is clearly a big fan of Capra, as his first feautre script Soft Top, Hard Shoulder is a modernised UK take on the classic Clark Gable road move It Happened One Night.
Capaldi's gothic horror won him a Best Live Action Short Film Oscar at the '95 ceremony, where he interestingly tied with another short film entitled Trevor. Capaldi later noted that the sheen has come off the trophy somewhat and that he held his nameplate on with blu-tak. When appearing on the Graham Norton Show alongside Tom Hanks, who had also won an Oscar that year for Philadelphia, Capaldi hilariously told the story of how he tried to use the trophy to get his flight home upgraded. Well you would, wouldn't you?
