BoJack Horseman Season 6: 7 Things It Must Do
3. Go Darker
In a way, it’s difficult to imagine how BoJack could get darker than his drug trip in episode 11 of Season 5. He lost touch with reality as his addiction spiralled out of control, eventually confusing his TV show for a conspiracy against him and strangling co-star Gina. However, BoJack has always upped the ante. It’s gotten progressively darker since Season 2, a season which ended with BoJack almost molesting a teenage girl.
While there’s debate amongst the fanbase over how terrible the incident with Penny was, with some pointing to BoJack’s vulnerability and Penny being both enthusiastic and of legal age, there’s no doubt that it was a moment most shows would sidestep. BoJack, however, stared at that dark moment head on, following it with death by overdose, divorce, miscarriage, deep exploration of Alzheimer’s and the reality of addiction.
There are definite opportunities for darkness next time around too. Princess Caroline’s life is about to turn upside down, BoJack has to get through rehab and Mr Peanutbutter and Pickles are in a bit of a... jam. BoJack has never flinched in the face of jet black plot threads. There’s no indication they’ll start now.
