Doctor Who: 8 Ways To Get To Know The 8th Doctor

5. Blood Of The Daleks

Screen Shot 2013 11 17 At 07 43 51 "We have come to help! Fish and chips for all!" Echoing "The Runaway Bride," (broadcast on BBC One less than a week earlier) The Doctor is greeted by the unexpected sight of an unexpected and unwanted guest in his Tardis. Lucie Miller a 21st century woman has arrived and despite The Doctor's best efforts, he simply can't get rid of her; either by taking her home or leaving her on another planet. The Doctor is resentful of being saddled with this mouthy northern girl and suspects that the Time Lords have dumped her on him as a part of a "Time Lord Witness Protection Programme." The pair soon find themselves on the devastated human colony Red Rocket Rising, a planet immersed in a devastating asteroid impact winter. There,a Dr. Mengele-esque scientist is conducting experiments on people using technology acquired from a crashed space ship. The acting President has accepted an offer of help from a highly unlikely source: the Dalek fleet! Sheridan Smith brings the "brash northern lass" Lucie Miller to life amusingly asking The Doctor if he is wearing a wig (playing off the long running stories of McGann despising the wig he wore in his first appearance). She is nothing like any companion we've seen before and the contrast between her and The Doctor is what makes their relationship such a joy to hear. The stories shared by Lucie and The Doctor are perhaps the best access point for fans of NewWho as while the stories tend to be structured like the Doctor Who serials of old, the subject matter is more diverse with a faster pace.
