If you think you can win someone over into getting into Doctor Who, chances are good that you can do the same with the works of horror author and nerd Jesus, Neil Gaiman. So why not kill two birds with one stone?

The Doctor gets a call from one of the last remaining Time Lords, coming from outside of the entire universe. Once there, the TARDIS almost immediately shuts down completely, its essence having been transferred into the body of a woman named Idris, killing her but giving the TARDIS full sentience.

Of course the whole thing is a trap devised by the eldritch presence that inhabits the little rock The Doctor landed on, in order to steal the TARDIS and head out into the universe to find a new source of food now that he's drained the last TARDIS in existence. Giving The Doctor and his most constant companion some much needed time to themselves to finally hash some stuff out.

Not only is this a fantastic standalone tale, hilarious, exciting, and this being Neil Gaiman - pants crappingly frightening, but it's also a brilliant examination of the relationship between The Doctor and the TARDIS, the one who's always there for him after everyone else has lef.
