Doctor Who: 10 Most Underrated Episodes Of The Revived Series

4. Amy's Choice

Time for another undervalued gem from the Eleventh Doctor's debut series now and Amy's Choice is one that pretty much does what it says on the tin. The Doctor's companion was forced to chew over an almighty decision when the Dream Lord took over the TARDIS and teased our heroes with different worlds which they kept falling asleep in and then waking up somewhere else entirely. It was confusing to say the very least. But which world was the real one? That was basically the general gist of the rest of the story as they tried to work out which world they'd have to sacrifice themselves within in order to return to the real one. You'd think it would be pretty straightforward to decide which reality was the fake one but, as it turns out, it was a much more difficult task than they had initially envisioned. To throw another level of confusion into the mix, in each world - the first was Amy and Rory's life in the coveted quarter of Upper Leadworth where Amy was heavily pregnant and the second was a TARDIS facing imminent destruction - they were faced with a threat which would test them to their very limits. Eventually it transpired that both worlds had in fact been an illusion, because that's just how the Dream Lord rolls, apparently. They certainly learned a lot about each other in the process, though, and Amy even sacrificed herself after Rory died in one of the worlds because she couldn't face the reality of living a life without him. This one is underrated in the sense that it's an extremely character driven piece so if that's what you tune in for, this is definitely the one for you. Perhaps it hasn't managed to stand the test of time because none of its developments went on to actually mean anything, so much so that its events were never even mentioned again. There's a great twist involving the Dream Lord's true identity at the end, though, which adds another intriguing dimension to his malevolence. When you get to this episode in your Doctor Who marathon, you can either watch it or skip ahead to the next one. Don't make the wrong choice.
