Doctor Who: 25 Actors We'd Love To Call The Doctor

10. James McAvoy

Trance James Mcavoy

James McAvoy is a strange one to mention in relation to casting the Doctor; he's more known for films, but is he bigger than the role of the Doctor? It seems hugely unlikely he'd ever be offered it, let alone take it, but it's an exciting prospect, nonetheless. Because although his Hollywood prominence is rising - a role in the X Men franchise helps with that - he still seems a perfect fit for playing a Time Lord; he's an intelligent actor who works on a lot of intelligent scripts, he's extremely likeable, and yet he's not quite the typical, dashing, British leading man. He's in many ways similar to countryman David Tennant, and both have been mentioned in relation to a Doctor Who film. Which isn't happening anymore, apparently.

9. Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren has already ruled herself out of being the Doctor. But she did advise that the BBC cast a gay, black woman. It's a shame to many though that Mirren would never consider the role. If there was ever to be a female Doctor, to have such a stately, commanding presence of an actress would conquer any doubters, and that's without touching on her abilities with comedy, tragedy and drama. If she doesn't want to be the Doctor though, what about an multi-Elizabeth episode featuring Joanna Page as One, Mirren as Two and Sophie Okonedo as Ten? The Royal Family could have a War Elizabeth too, though maybe not played by John Hurt in a dress.
