Doctor Who: 8 Jon Pertwee Serials You Need To Revisit In January

6. Terror Of The Autons (1971)

This has already been praised in a previous list of Best Master Stories but it doesn€™t hurt to say it again. Roger Delgado is awesome. Seriously. 44 years ago this month, the most suave version of the Master to ever exist stepped out€well, out of a horse trailer, but it makes sense in context, and proceeded to show us what really happens when good Time Lords go bad. It€™s an open question whether he was ever really good, though. Fans also get Jo Grant and Mike Yates, a good case of taking the smooth with the rough, but stick with it because both of them will eventually grow on us. And as for the Autons... While they themselves are not quite as creepy as in their aforementioned previous appearance, they€™re far more deadly this time around as they take over everything from devil dolls to daffodils and other plasticy items ending in 'd'. (Fans are reminded of Rose Tyler€™s line about them taking over breast implants - D-cups, perhaps?). They were certainly frightening enough to get loads of complaints from parents about the show though in retrospect they may simply have been complaining about the inordinate use of chromakey throughout the entire story. It's still worth celebrating, though!
