Doctor Who: Every Russell T Davies Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
18. Lux
Of all RTD’s recent scripts, Lux is easily one of the most imaginative.
Having the Doctor go up against a living cartoon is a genius idea. And thanks to the art team, Alan Cumming’s vocal performance and Murray Gold’s instantly catchy theme song, Mr Ring-a-Ding absolutely fulfilled his potential.
The story is pretty strong too, with a sound logic to both Mr RAD’s plan (using the light of the Doctor’s regeneration energy to become 3D) and his downfall (he can only exist within darkness).
The thing that lets it down is the stuff with the fans.
It’s a scene that, in principle, could have worked. But in practice it leans a bit too heavily into stereotypes. Plus it’s totally drowned out by the score. And all that real-life merch in the background is just distracting.
A Doctor Who story without at least one cringeworthy moment? Don’t make us laugh!
