Dodo was a companion to the First Doctor, arriving before Ben Jackson. She was a young woman who discovered the TARDIS entirely by accident, believing it to be the Police Box it was impersonating. This is a plot point that worked perfectly at the time it was released, though has aged slightly as the years have passed.

She was both carefree and a little reckless. This led to her causing a plague on one of her first journeys in the TARDIS, passing on her cold to a race that had never encountered it. This cycled back, infecting her fellow traveller Stephen Taylor before she was able to help cure it with the Doctor's help.

Her ending is quite a sad one. She decided to remain on Earth after a time, though then spent the rest of her life in and out of halfway homes. She was incarcerated in mental institutions and eventually shot and killed. By this stage, the Third Doctor believed her to have died before her time, feeling that he had let her down.
