4. The Red Wedding

This stands as the most shocking moment in Game of Thrones, and perhaps one of the most shocking moments in modern TV history. The wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey turns into a bloodbath, as the music subtly turns into Rains of Castamere before the slaughter of Robb and Catelyn Stark, along with a whole host of their bannermen, not to mention Grey Wind.

As if dispatching of two major characters wasn’t enough to shock and annoy fans, one deviation from the books certainly did. In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Robb’s wife isn’t present at the wedding. In the show, not only is she present, she is heavily pregnant, and stabbed in the stomach - because the Red Wedding wasn’t already bloody enough... It took what was a great scene in the book to another level of brutality, and while it’s undoubtedly one of the best moments in the show’s history, there were those unhappy with the extra addition.
