Making A Murderer: Where Are They Now?
1. Steven Avery Makes Another Bid For Freedom
Steven Avery still resides in Waupun Correctional Institution, stripped of his freedoms and convicted of a serious crime that he may not have committed for the second time in his life. No matter how you feel about the father-of-four, it is undeniable that the system has repeatedly failed him throughout his life, and continues to do so today.
Last year, Avery received news that he had won the right to appeal his case after potential new evidence was discovered. Possible human bones were found in a gravel pit, which, despite never being tested for DNA, were then passed over to Teresa Halbach’s family. If the bones did in fact belong to the murdered photographer, then the prosecution’s theory that she was killed on Avery’s property would be undermined, casting doubt upon their entire argument. Likewise, a forensic fire expert had concluded that no human body was ever in his burn pit, exposing further holes in their claims. Unfortunately, despite this critical information coming to light, Avery’s request for a new trial was rejected in August 2019.
2020 has not been going particularly well for Avery either. In prison, he contracted the COVID-19 virus, although he appears to have since fully recovered. There have been no significant new developments in his case over the past few months, but no matter what adversities he faces, it is clear that he and his supporters will not stop campaigning until he has been exonerated.
