Marvel's Daredevil: 10 Reasons It's The Best Comic Book Show Ever
4. It Is A Crime Show First, Superhero Show Second
As part of its adult-oriented focus, the show is predominantly a crime show, focussing hugely on the inner workings of the organized crime structure in Hell's Kitchen and also the legal system that Nelson & Murdock operate within.
This fits in perfectly with the best examples of Daredevil in the comics: Frank Miller's legendary run in the 1980's and the Brian Michael Bendis/Alex Maleev tandem of the mid 2000's. These comics functioned as gritty crime dramas that featured superhero fisticuffs on occasion, but were not defined by them.
The show follows this model to perfection. It isn't unusual to go an episode or two with very little costumed action. Instead, the focus is on Wilson Fisk and his shady business-dealings or Foggy and Matt defending an elderly client whose landlord is being paid by Fisk to forcibly evict her from her home.
Likewise, the double crosses and strained relationships between Fisk and his associates, the blind drug-runner Madame Gao and the oily financial expert Leland Owlsley, are compellingly intricate.
The audience is drawn in to these stories and characters and then whenever the action breaks out, it means more. In many ways, Daredevil is the show that Gotham should have been, but fails to be in every conceivable way: a gritty crime drama with characters that the audience cares about.
