Schitt's Creek: 10 Best Standalone Episodes

1. Carl's Funeral - S1E9

Schitt's Creek
CBC

Carl's Funeral teeters precariously on some pretty dark humour at times, never more so than when Bob's beloved brother unexpectedly passes away - a bizarre belt-caught-in-ceiling-fan "accident."

Despite the fact that the Rose family have been in Schitt's Creek for all of a few weeks, innocent-to-a-fault Bob comes to Johnny to ask him to take part as pallbearer - and then, when the bad-back fake-out doesn't work, as speaker... at a funeral for a man that he's never met.

Any other sitcom might go for a couple of tame misdemeanors that end with an apologetic shrug. However, the Roses' precarious situation doesn't really led itself to crisis management. After all, they have lost their entire livelihoods to a dodgy business practice and are forced to live in a small town motel with plumbing issues and limited beds.

Johnny is strong willed, but even this is too much to deal with. His spiral of self-deprecation that threatens to properly derail Carl's funeral can only be saved by one thing: an emergency rendition of Danny Boy by one Moira Rose. Watch this episode and don't spend the following week busting into a haunting tribute to the woman of the hour, I dare you.
