Sherlock: Every Episode Ranked Worst To Best

1. The Reichenbach Fall

Could it be anything else? People will tell you that 'The Reichenbach Fall' is so good because it's so complex; there's a twist around every turn, signposted by the "IOU"s and the gradual downfall of Sherlock Holmes. But 'The Reichenbach Fall' is really quite simple. It's a rivalry between two people; one of whom wants to tear down the entire world to destroy his nemesis, and the other one has so much to lose. This episode plays off everything that Sherlock is up to this point; it's about the darkness in your heroes, about the trust you place in your friends, and about two super-geniuses going face to face in the most unnerving battle of wits on television. Sherlock Holmes is famously always one step ahead of anyone else. And the twists work so well in 'The Reichenbach Fall', because we see that he's not perfect. He's beaten, over and over again, and we love to see that. We love multi-faceted characters and morally grey heroes. But as John Watson stands at that grave, and his voice breaks, it's obvious that Sherlock is a show that will only ever be about human emotion. It's about the relationship that John has with his best friend, and it's about how Sherlock tried his best not to hurt him; if it wasn't, he'd have put a bullet in Moriarty's head himself. And that's a fairly alright note for me to end on too: Sherlock is a detective show, but it's only ever about the relationship that a man has with his best friend. Maybe that's we love it so much...
