Star Trek Deep Space Nine Cast: Where Are They Now?

1. Captain Sisko - Avery Brooks

Avery Brooks is an outspoken activist and a highly talented musician. He is also one of the few cast members not to participate on screen for the recent documentary What We Left Behind, as he felt that after twenty years of interviews, he had nothing new to say on the show.

However, while that may be seen as reluctance to be associated with Deep Space Nine anymore, that is far from the truth. He has been involved in the production of several documentaries, perhaps most notably as part of William Shatner's docu-series The Captains, wherein he was interviewed by Shatner and also featured as musical director.

Already a well-known actor before taking on the role of Commander Sisko, he was the first African-American lead actor in any of the Star Trek series and throughout his time on the show, was involved in several of the franchise's most well-known takes on civil rights. The episode Far Beyond The Stars, in which he stars as science-fiction writer Benny Russell, was also directed by him.

While there are currently no plans for Brooks to return to the franchise (who wouldn't love a Star Trek: Sisko series?), his work on Deep Space Nine serves among the most inspirational acting across the franchise. The fact that he juggled all seven seasons while retaining a professorship at Rutgers University, occasionally conducting lectures in costume, is no mean feat. One of the best actors that the franchise brought on board, Brooks truly is a credit to Star Trek.
