Star Trek: Every Enterprise Ranked Worst To Best
15. Phase II 1701
Matt Jefferies returned to the Enterprise when it came time to redesign it to fit the aesthetic of Star Trek Phase II, as it was then called. He made the most exterior changes to the nacelles and the neck, figuring that while there would be massive internal changes, there wasn't much need to change the outside of the ship.
Garfield and Judith Reeves-Stevens wrote a companion book to the abandoned Phase II show, which includes interviews with Jefferies.
As with the original design, he wanted to ensure that the nacelles were kept up and away from the crew, should something go horribly wrong. He slimmed them down, removing the rounded bussard collectors and taped the pylons backward, rather than straight out to the sides.
