The Simpsons: 8 Episodes From The Bad Seasons You Need To Watch

1. Barthood

Barthood is a genuine Simpsons masterpiece. While others here might have been lowlights of the glittering Golden Age of Seasons 3 to 9, Barthood fits comfortably with the very best.

As the name suggests, the episode parodies Richard Linklater's Oscar-winning film, Boyhood. But this is not some throw away parody like the Ed Sheeran-driven Haw Haw Land. Perhaps not quite at the level of The Shinning, Barthood is the most poignant and relevant parody they've done in years.

Simultaneously a flashback and flashforward, it focusses on Bart aged 6 to 26. Other characters get a look in too, with Lisa and Nelson a very sweet couple, making a change from the old gag of her marrying Milhouse.

But the focus is very much on Bart. There's a soul here, reminiscent of Season 6's Lisa On Ice, as we see Bart saddened by Homer's apparent lack of care for him. Little Bart feels constantly in Lisa's shadow too, though we see a Hellfish-esque connection with Grampa which again opts for storytelling and substance over easy gags.

For all Bart is a little hellraiser, this episode gives a wonderful glimpse into the future the fans want him to have. One where he's successful, happy, and loved.
