The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs From "Bye"

7. Down: Unnecessary Voiceovers

The Ones Who Live
AMC

A small gripe, this, but a necessary one.

Unlike the previous two episodes, "Bye" takes place in a mostly linear fashion, picking up after the last episode threw Rick and Michonne into the bowels of the CRM. There's a brief flashback shining some light on Rick and Jadis's arrangement (more on that later), but otherwise the episode is fairly straightforward.

This is, by and large, a good thing, allowing its actors to shine as characters reduced to long silences and passing glances, looks that capture a world of feeling and allow us to see what they're thinking without explicitly telling us.

That is, save for a very brief, treacly moment where Michonne starts giving some voiceover (as a letter to Judith) to explain everything she's feeling. It talks down to the audience and undercuts the drama playing out on-screen, which is irritating considering how the rest of the episode runs.

But, hey: Judith content! If we don't get a full Grimes family reunion after all of this, I swear...
