True Detective Season 2: 10 Rumours You Need To Know

10. T Bone Burnett Won't Be Back

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4zluA60hjs The first season of True Detective managed to pull off such an intense, foreboding atmosphere because every element of the show worked in unison: the moody performances by everyone (particularly McConaughey and Harrelson), the washed-out cinematic direction of Cary Fukunaga, the desolate Louisiana and - oh yeah - the music. From the Southern Gothic country of The Handsome Family's Far From Any Road that soundtracked the opening credits to the dark, rumbling orchestration of the original score, the show's tone was as effortlessly controlled aurally as visually. And that was all thanks to one T Bone Burnett. A longtime musician and songwriter in his own right - previously a member of Bob Dylan's touring band and multiple award-winner for his movie work on the likes of O Brother Where Art Thou? and Walk The Line - it was Burnett who both composed the score and chose the perfectly suited soundtrack. Most of said soundtrack was suited to the setting, and also to the composer's particular skillset - namely down country, swampy blues and folk. Rumour has it that this integral member of True Detective's first season won't be returning for the second which, on one hand, is a shame (Burnett's a soundtrack master and all) but also makes sense, since the next season will be totally shifting locations, so here's hoping they manage to find someone whose handle on Californian rock is as adept as Burnett's on the spooky country stuff.
