True Detective Season 2: 10 Rumours You Need To Know
7. Public Transport > Satanic Cults
One of the few explicitly real "supernatural" parts of True Detective's first season was the terrifying cult which, technically, worshipped Chamber's equally devilish Yellow King rather than the dark lord Satan himself, but they still did plenty of nasty stuff in his name regardless. Like murder, child abuse, and a whole lotta incest from the looks of Errol Childress's house of horror from the finale. Again the show was being very clever by tapping into some real world, local concepts, like the moral panic about (mostly non-existent) Satanic cults in the eighties, and the actual conspiracies to kidnap and torture young children that occurred in the South not long after. So obviously they can't do that again, but thankfully California has its own history of occult depravity. And, erm, it has something to do with the transportation system, as Pizzolatto told us just a moment ago. "The secret occult history of the United States transportation system." What does that mean? We don't know. It's a secret. A leaked plot outline gives us a little more of an insight, suggesting this time the murder victim is knocked off "amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state." Thrilling! Oh but he is found with "satanic symbols etched on his chest," so that's something.
