Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa appeared in the first season episode of The Next Generation Encounter At Farpoint as a Mandarin Bailiff. To many viewers, Tagawa may be best known as Shang Tsung, having appeared in Paul W.S. Anderson's Mortal Kombat movie in the 90s, its sequel (via archival footage), and the series Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

Tagawa's first film role was in 1987, acting in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor. He recalled this being an amazing experience, particularly arriving so early in his career, and he relished the chance to work in China.

A Japanese-American man, he moved to LA at a young age, where he began to study and teach his own form of martial art - Chu Shin. He had continued to act in many different productions, including Blue Eyed Samurai, which was recently released on Netflix, and Amazon's The Man In The High Castle.

He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was 75 when he died.
